BENEFITS OF A HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAM

New England Tactical Sports Medicine completed individualized screenings and injury prevention programs to members of one Rhode Island Fire Department, and within the first year of implementation, they reported only one workman’s compensation claim.

With an injury prevention program, studies have demonstrated a 42% decrease in injury, and a 62% decrease in time lost due to injury.

The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine published a study reporting a reduction in lost work days by more than 50% when employees had access to early, in-house physical medicine and rehabilitation.  This study also demonstrated that the likelihood of returning to full duty within 3 weeks of being injured more than doubled.

ABOUT

Headshot.jpg

Jessica Scott is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Certified Athletic Trainer, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and a Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator.  She received her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine, as well as her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Quinnipiac University.  While in graduate school, Jessica worked as a Graduate Assistant in the Office of Athletic Training and Sports Medicine.  As a Graduate Assistant, she helped teach undergraduate Athletic Training classes and held private and group study sessions.  In addition, she served as a Certified Athletic Trainer for the Quinnipiac Bobcat’s Division I out of season and non-traditional sports teams, providing on-field medical care and follow-up treatment and rehabilitation.

Throughout her career, Jessica has worked with a variety of high school, collegiate, and professional athletes, providing emergency care and rehabilitation for sports injuries.  As a Certified Athletic Trainer, Jessica spent eight seasons working within the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Brewster Whitecaps Baseball Club and the Orleans Firebirds Athletic Association.  She currently works as a Physical Therapist in Rhode Island Hospital’s outpatient rehabilitation department, treating a number of orthopedic, surgical, and concussion patients.

As the daughter of a professional Firefighter, Jessica has grown up seeing the physical demands and requirements of the Firefighting profession.  Many Firefighters, EMTs, Law Enforcement, and Military Personnel, also known as Tactical Athletes, are at increased risk of numerous health conditions and chronic injuries.  Jessica, therefore, started New England Tactical Sports Medicine, a company dedicated to improving the health and wellness of Tactical Athletes.  As the company’s founder and CEO, Jessica provides rehabilitation services, educational seminars regarding injury prevention, and fitness programs to promote healthy lifestyles and improved physical performance.

Jessica individualizes each program for every client to meet their specific needs.  She follows a comprehensive approach to injury prevention and rehabilitative care.  Each Tactical Athlete she works with receives a complete initial evaluation and subsequent follow-up assessments to track progress.  She specializes in sports medicine, promoting cardiovascular health and endurance, and treats numerous musculoskeletal injuries, surgical conditions, concussions, and head injuries.

Each rehabilitation therapeutic exercise prescribed and every fitness program is individualized for every Tactical Athlete.  Both rehabilitation and strength and conditioning programs utilize traditional gym equipment, including free weights, resistance bands, and barbells.  Jessica also uses non-traditional forms of exercise, including sandbag training; body-weight exercises; and functional, work-related activities to assist in meeting the specific needs of Tactical Athletes.  Jessica is certified in various pain-relieving techniques, including dry needling, cupping therapy, and multiple soft tissue massage methods.

In addition to fitness programs and rehabilitation services, Jessica provides educational lectures and workshops, which include topics in cardiovascular health, nutrition, hydration, body mechanics (proper lifting), stretching, weight loss, and heat/cold illness.  Her philosophy includes preventing injuries on the job by treating each Tactical Athlete individually as a whole person, working with the entire body to enhance healing and performance fitness.
